CULTURAL AFFAIRS – CALL TO ACTION!

County Arts Proposed Budget Cut

The proposed Miami-Dade County budget eliminates $2.3 million of support for the grants programs of the Department of Cultural Affairs.  If enacted, this would reduce grants by about 25 percent to more than 400 cultural organizations.  Combined with last year’s cut, this would be a combined reduction of about 40 percent to each grant or a loss of $3.7 million in cultural grants funds.  Chamber members are urged to take the following important actions to help save the county’s cultural arts budget: write -- personalize and send e-mails, faxes and letters to every county commissioner, the mayor and the county manager; call every key county official and emphasize specifically how important county arts support is to you and/or your cultural organization; and testify -- attend and register to speak at the two upcoming County Commission Budget Hearings where the County’s budget will be discussed and finalized for the coming year.  Both budget hearings begin at 5:01 p.m. on September 13 and 23 in the County Commission Chamber, 111 N.W. 1st Street, 2nd Floor.  Crowds are expected…arrive early and be prepared to wait to make your case; you will have two minutes to speak.

Cutting Costs and Complexity in Your Exchange Environment, September 15

Learn how to keep your company’s email up and running in a cost effective manner.  The number of messages the average business user can expect to send and receive is expected to increase by 33 percent over the next four years. As mailboxes increase in size to support growth, administrators have to deal with the issues of backup and timely recovery of mail.  In addition, the average usage of e-mail is close to two hours per day; if users can’t access their email, or lose email data, the result is significant down time and loss of money for a business.  Industry experts include: Michael Brunetti, account technology strategist, Microsoft; Dan O’Brien, technology consultant manager-SMB, EMC; Brett Udashkin, VP enterprise marketing, TigerDirect; and will be moderated by Kevin M. Levy, business, corporate and technology attorney, Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart, P.A.   Contact: Reina Deleon, 305-577-5438 | rdeleon@miamichamber.com
